Orenda Ensemble and High Tea - 2.30 Pm 12 October 2025

Beethoven’s Piano Trio Op 97 - The Archduke

The Orenda Ensemble was created out of a shared desire to express the divine moments of musical joy and connection experienced when performing. This unique ensemble, featuring musicians Michael Howell (flute), Alix Hamilton (viola), and Adam Pinto (piano), has been exploring the possibilities within the existing repertoire of classical trios. With its unusual instrumentation, the Orenda Ensemble are presented with an opportunity to explore the nature of these works to a deeper understanding as they often arrange existing works to adapt it to their specific formation, whilst creating a new musical conversation within the language of the compositional greats.

Beethoven: The Archduke Piano Trio Op.97

Step into a world where tradition meets transformation. Orenda—a unique ensemble with Michael Howell on Flute, Alix Hamilton on Viola, and Adam Pinto on Piano—invites you to experience Beethoven’s Archduke Trio as you've never heard it before.

Originally composed in 1811 for the patron and pianist Archduke Rudolph of Austria, this luminous work was one of Beethoven’s final chamber pieces before total deafness overtook him. Now, centuries later, Orenda offers a fresh perspective, illuminating its grandeur and intimacy through a vibrant new timbral palette.

With the soaring voice of the flute replacing the violin, and the warm, mellow hues of the viola, this performance reveals unexpected textures and renewed lyricism—breathing new life into a timeless masterpiece

Adam Pinto:

Perth pianist, researcher and composer, Adam Pinto, lectures in piano and musicology at the University of Western Australia, and examines for the AMEB. He performs regularly in venues throughout Australia, including with the Western Australian Symphony Orchestra, and has been recorded for broadcast by the A.B.C. Adam is a sought-after chamber musician, working with local and international soloists at instrumental festivals worldwide.

His interest in new music has seen him collaborate and premiere works by many Australian composers and perform in New Music Festivals internationally. This passion has led him to complete Doctoral studies at the University of Western Australia exploring the neglected piano compositions of Roger Smalley OAM. A recently released CD featuring the works of Smalley entitled “Transformation” is available through Tall Poppies and has been reviewed as “a beautifully recorded collection of works, consummately performed and of considerable historical significance” in Limelight.

Comfortable in classical and modern styles, Adam works closely with Paul Tanner and Matt Styles in Mix’t trio exploring cross genre compositions and pushing the boundaries of contemporary performance. Their first disc “Home by 11” is available through Tall Poppies. For over decade, Adam has also worked regularly with pianist Emily Green- Armytage in 2.10, performing and premiering new contemporary works for two pianists and within larger ensembles. More recently, as a member of Orenda Ensemble, Adam has explored the sonic possibilities within arrangements of a rich variety of chamber music repertoire with flautist Michael Howell and violist Alix Hamilton.

“a stunningly virtuoso reading by Adam Pinto who steered a sure and nimble

way through this musical minefield, as at the work’s many explosive

climaxes, he hurled great chunks of sound into the auditorium”

Alix Hamilton:

Since graduating with a Bachelor of Music on violin from the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), Alix Hamilton has focused her energies on viola, becoming a leading violist in the freelance music scene in Perth. As well as a teacher, Alix regularly performs as both a chamber and orchestral musician, working with groups such as the Australian Baroque, Aquila, Bembina Ensemble, Flamingo Strings, Perth Symphony Orchestra, Perth Chamber Orchestra, the Orenda Ensemble, and the West Australian Philharmonic. Alix regularly spends time studying alongside the highest calibre of musicians internationally through various festivals working with ensembles such as the Cremona String Quartet, Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, the Silk Road Ensemble and residency programs with violist William Coleman. In 2017, Alix completed a Master of Arts (Performing Arts) under international soloist Alexandre Da Costa, and violist Berian Evans at WAAPA, specialising in the virtuosic viola repertoire of twentieth century, English composer Benjamin Dale.

Michael Howell:

Michael Howell was born in Perth and began playing the flute at age 10. Michael graduated from the University of

Western Australia in 1996 under the tuition of Mr. Neil Fisenden, where subsequent postgraduate study took him to

the University of Music in Weimar, Germany and concert engagements throughout Germany and Switzerland. As a

freelance musician, Michael performs with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, is principal flute for the West

Australian Philharmonic Orchestra and Fremantle Chamber Orchestra and enjoys promoting chamber music for

flute with the Orenda Ensemble. Michael lectures in flute at the University of Western Australia and the

WA Academy of Performing Arts and is also Western Australia's flute repairer of choice. Michael performs on an

original flute made in 1880 by the celebrated French flute maker Louis Lot.
